Stubby Pringle's Christmas

Gifts of the Heart

Years ago, Reader's Digest published "just another article"-or so it seemed, among so many-a story about a cowboy Christmas, but it was a bombshell. Later, it appeared in Boy's Life twice, the most recent after our own reprinting. Research in all our (large city) libraries netted neither of the two early versions and only one copy of the little 43-page book. That little book provided the pages you are about to read. Such a significant gem of light should not be kept under a bushel-particularly at Christmas.

Our special edition of this tale is reprinted with the permission of Jack Schaefers widow, Louise. She passed to us, "Jack would have loved to have heard your words of praise for his story!" We eagerly pass along this little known "classic" to you. Consider reading it aloud to others in your leadership role this season.

Jack Schaefer was also the author of "Shane" and many other Western novels. The rustic, captivating illustrations by Lorence Bjorklund are an exciting walkthrough of the finest western art gallery-or a trip in time and senses to the magic occurence itself.

It's going to grow on you, too. If you are a Scouter, you share the values embodied in the story. If you are not of the Christian belief, we invite and would share other interpretive suggestions.

You can own a specially printed set of 30 "Stubby Pringle" illustration enlargements (8 1/2" x 11") from the story suitable for mounting on card stock or used during oral reading of the story for only $ 8.00 plus shipping.
